Anthony Bourdain’s new documentary “Roadrunner” is based in part on bass

On July 16, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain will open in US theaters. Like many documentaries, the film collects archival footage, including interviews and excerpts, to try to tell the story of its subject in their own words. It also includes words that Bourdain never spoke to the camera before he died by suicide in 2018, yet you’ll hear him say them.

In an interview with The New Yorker, the film’s director, Morgan Neville, said there were three quotes he wanted Bourdain to tell where there are no recordings, and so he recreated them using software instead. “I made an AI model of his voice,” he told the magazine.

It seems that this was not easy. In a separate interview with GQ, Neville said he contacted four different companies about the project before deciding which would be best. That company fed about twelve hours of audio to an AI model. Much of the work involved setting the exact tone of Bourdain’s voice, Neville wanted the show to be repeated because the way the author and travel host narrated his writing had changed so much over his years on television.

Compared to some of the other ways we’ve seen artificial intelligence and deep fakes used to deceive people, this isn’t the worst example, but its ethics are still questionable. The film, as far as we know, does not include disclosure about the use of artificial intelligence to duplicate Bourdain’s voice. “If you watched the movie, other than that line you mentioned, you probably wouldn’t know what other lines the AI spoke, and you wouldn’t,” Neville told The New Yorker. “We can have a documentary ethics committee on this topic later.” In his interview with GQ, he said the Bourdain family told him “Tony would have been nice with that,” adding, “I was just trying to make [the quotes] Come alive,”
