Trey Amburgey waited a long time to get a phone call with the Yankees.
It finally came on Wednesday night, but the player will have to wait at least another day to make his MLB debut.
The Yankees chose to hold Amburgey ahead of Thursday’s scheduled opening of the series against the Red Sox, only to have the game postponed due to multiple positive COVID-19 cases within the Yankees Club.
Before the Yankees announced they had canceled batting training to undergo further testing – the game was postponed shortly – Amberghi said he was not in the squad on Thursday but is expected to start on Friday.
The right-handed hitter, who has been hitting 0.312 with a 0.960 OPS in 38 games this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, said he was surprised by the timing of the transition. The Yankees have struggled with a lack of production from their left-footed players this season, but Amburgey will now offer another option in the outside corner while Clint Frazier (vertigo) and Miguel Andujar (left wrist strain) are on the injured list.

I was ready, Amberghi said. “He told everyone around me that I was ready. So when the call came, I was ready.
“I would be lying if I said I’m not disappointed [waiting]. It’s a dream to come here and play for the Yankees. At the same time, I knew going into the year was going to be tough, and I wouldn’t play last year. So I had a tough pile to climb, but being here now, I’m ready to go whenever they call my name.”
The 26-year-old Amburgey, who grew up a Red Sox fan because his mom and grandparents are from Boston, was looking forward to making his debut against them. He expected 11 members of his family and friends to turn up after sharing the news with them late Wednesday night, after RailRiders boss Doug Davis broke the promotion to him.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to try and wake my wife,'” Amberge said, ’cause she went to bed, and it was past midnight. And I said, ‘Hey, guess where I’ll be tomorrow? I started crying and just lost it. I called my parents right after that. They were supposed to go to a concert or something this weekend and I was like, ‘You have to cancel it.’ They were like, ‘Why?’ I’m like, ‘” I’ll be in the Bronx. “My mom lost her. So it was a good moment.”
Amburgey, the Yankees’ 13th-round pick in 2015, attributed his improved results this season to a change in approach.
‘Stay in my area, not buy what [the pitcher is] Amberghi said. “It has worked so far and I hope to continue doing it here.”
