NBA stars join LeBron in Space Jam: A New Legacy

During the original intergalactic battle of hoops in “Space Jam,” which was released in 1996, Michael Jordan’s terrifying opponents were a group of threats nicknamed the “Monstars.” The roster was full of trans aliens who stole talent from the stars of the era – Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Sean Bradley, Moggie Boggs, and Larry Johnson.

But in LeBron James’ battle to escape the Serververse in “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” he’s forced to face a new team of villains known as the Goon Squad, which also draws on the best talent in the NBA and WNBA.

This time around, the animations are much smoother, displaying movements that look multifaceted and frightening. Meet the members of Goon Squad and their real-life counterparts.

The 31-year-old Golden State Warrior is known for his shooting style in textbooks. Thompson, drafted in 2011, won three NBA championships with his team and five times NBA All-Star. After rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2019 and then rupturing his Achilles tendon in November 2020, he has been sidelined for the past two seasons. But fans are looking forward to returning in the fall. Meanwhile, he’s showing off his funny bone.

On the movie’s red carpet, when asked which Looney Tune would like to be on his cast, Thompson came out in favor of a character banned for some hateful behavior prior to #MeToo. “Maybe Pepé Le Pew because nobody wants to get close to that guy, so if I’m by his side, I’ll have an open shot. That’s the stench. I remember that from the first time too.”

Goon, Wet-Fire, can switch between covering with water or flames to mess with his opponents.

The great UConn and guard of Phoenix Mercury has had three WNBA Championships, one MVP award and ice water running through her veins. Her ability to score in pressure situations has earned her comparisons to the late Kobe Bryant, and the nickname White Mamba. Competition runs in her family. Born in Italy but raised in Argentina, Torrisi’s father played professional football in Italy. She is married to Benny Taylor, assistant coach at Mercury until July 2020, when she resigned to be a full-time mother to their son Leo Michael Taurasi-Taylor.

In New Legacy, Taurasi is combined with a snake, so not only can she shoot hoops – she can slam the other team with her tail.

The 31-year-old Nigerian-American superstar is also part act brother. Her younger sister, Cheney, played with her at Stanford and is her current teammate at the Los Angeles Sparks. Ogwumike, who grew up in Texas, won the WNBA Championship in 2016, was NBA Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and an All-Star selection six times.

Can she repeat this court success as part of Goon Squad? The spider-man Arachnica sure has eight legs to dodge.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard trades in as the good guy to join Goon Squad as Chronos. Warner Bros., Scott Odette/NBAE via Getty Images Damian Lillard as Cronos

The Portland Trail Blazers guard is known throughout the league as a good guy and a selfless fellow. Last month, he even received the Twyman-Stokes Team of the Year award, a league-wide award.

In other words, he flips the script on his character on the field by playing with bad guys. Nicknamed “Dame Time,” the 31-year-old Oakland, California-born is a six-time NBA All-Star and was the league’s star of the year in 2013.

Inspired by Lillard’s speed, the Chronos are ultra-fast and made of metal.

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis inspired The Brow, a bird-like monster, playing against real teammate LeBron James, Warner Bros., Wally Scalig/NBAE via Getty Images, Anthony Davis as Usher

Known for embracing his bold trademark, Davis had to play against current Los Angeles Lakers teammate LeBron James in the summertime movie. The pair have a history. They won the NBA Championship together in the NBA Bubble 2020. But that title was just another highlight for the eight-time NBA All-star. The strong striker who attended Kentucky also won an NCAA championship in 2012 and a gold medal at the London Olympics.

On the original “Space Jam,” the seal sang “Fly Like an Eagle.” In the new movie, thanks to his character’s wings, Davis really can.
