Surfside, Florida – Disturbing reports have emerged of a hacker taking advantage of those killed in the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium building in Surfside.
Officials said the criminal sees the names of the victims in the news and then steals their identities.
Charles Burkett, mayor of Surfside, told Local 10 News that he is surprised and hopes he will be arrested soon.
“(They) violated the rights of an individual, but worse than that, a deceased and a grieving family,” he said.
Families are urged to check their loved one’s credit to ensure that they, too, are not being targeted.
“It’s horrible,” Burkett said. “I can’t wait to come face to face with this business right now, and I think the whole of South Florida is eager to see who would do something like this – what kind of people would do something like that. But I’m looking forward to getting caught by the police department, and they’re looking outside.” I don’t want to be that person now.”

The mayor said he didn’t want to reveal more details about how the hacker managed to steal the victims’ identities because he didn’t think it would have been helpful to release that information.
The authorities did not reveal more details about the crime and did not reveal the intended victims.
