Team Yankees with COVID restrictions shut down by Red Sox

Even with six players on the roster with COVID-19, a handful of new players on the roster and a downed season, Gerrit Cole said the Yankees’ stand-off before Friday night’s game against the Red Sox was “business as usual.”

Then the Yankees came out and played like that, losing another game to Boston, 4-0, in the Bronx.

If you’re keeping score, they’re down six players due to COVID-19, lost all seven games against the Red Sox and lost nine games from Boston in the AL East, in fourth. The two are just over .500 (46-44) two games.

Playing without Aaron Judge and Geo Orchila after they were put on COVID-19 IL Friday, the Yankees used their ragtag lineup to start the second half of the season, and it was just as productive as their regular lineup in the first half.

“We’re in trouble,” coach Aaron Boone said after the recent defeat. “We have to play baseball really well to get back to this. We have to have that focus while walking the field every day. Rinse and repeat.”

Friday offered a different challenge, as the Yankees had to start with Chris Gittens and Trey Ambergey, who was making his MLB debut.

After the Gittens walked by two leades in the seventh inning and the Yankees tried to get back into the game, they used Greg Allen and Hoy Jun Park – who was also making his MLB debut – as hitters.

Allen came up with one song, but Park stuck out.

Jordan Montgomery started his strength, needing only eight pitches to run the perfect first round.

But after Giancarlo Stanton scored a double at the bottom of the first, Montgomery opened the second by walking with Xander Bogarts and giving up a double by Raphael DeVerse, which Brett Gardner couldn’t run down the center-left.

Bogarts scored on the ground to a short by Hunter Renfrew. After Cristian Vazquez flew into the caution lane at the left, Cristian Arroyo advanced to the right center to make the score 3-0.

This resulted in a chorus of boos from the audience as Montgomery needed 36 shots to get out of the role.

With their attack in disarray, it wasn’t the start of the game the Yankees had been looking for from Montgomery, though the left-winger did not concede another hit in their six-stroke outing.

Their biggest problem came when attacking, as they were closed off by left-handed Eduardo Rodriguez, who threw 5²/innings without goals.

After DJ LeMahieu’s lead single at the start, the Yankees didn’t get another hit until Rougned Odor doubled up with two in the sixth part to end Rodriguez’s night.

The Yankees managed to deal with the first threat against Rodriguez by two goals in the fifth inning.

Gittens walked and Amburgey slipped to third, but Bobby Dalbec couldn’t handle Devers’ throw and charged a foul.

Gary Sanchez can’t hide his displeasure as Red Sox number two Christian Arroyo celebrates his two-time home run.

With the runners on the corners, Tim Lucastro hit to finish the run.

The Yankees managed only three hits, and were disqualified for the second time in five games.

It’s tough,” Montgomery said. “We lose the judge, we lose Geo. We’re back from the All-Star break after a good run in Seattle and Houston. It’s hard to lose those bats. We have to go out there, keep playing hard and bounce back as best we can.”

No matter who is – or not – in the squad, Boone knows that time is of the essence.

“We have to find a way,” Boone said. “Tonight begins with the attack. We should be able to set up something to give ourselves a chance.”

Instead, the Yankees fell further into the division and certainly didn’t look like a team ready to take a tour. That’s especially true with six of his next eight games scheduled against the Red Sox, who lost four out of five before the break, but played like the number one team on Friday.
