The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that with cases of COVID-19 rising across the United States, the disease has become an “unvaccinated epidemic.”
“There is a message that is crystal clear: This has become a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walinsky said during a news conference Friday. “We are seeing outbreaks in parts of the country with low immunization coverage because unvaccinated people are at risk.”
She added that 97% of the cases of the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19) in the hospital are for people who are not vaccinated against the virus.
Since last week, cases are up about 70%, hospital admissions are up 36%, and deaths are up 26%, Walinsky said.
“If you are not vaccinated, you will still be at risk,” Walinsky said.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 160.4 million people across the United States are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 – that’s 48.3% of the total population.
Among people 12 years of age and older who are eligible for the vaccine, 56.5% of people are fully vaccinated.
