Warner Bros. Space Jam: A New Legacy turned box office expectations on its head, beating expectations of Tracker and “Black Widow” to easily take the number one spot at the box office with $13 million from 3,965 screens on Friday and an estimated $32 million opening weekend .

Entering the weekend, “Space Jam 2” was projected to top $20 million, both behind “Black Widow” on the charts and behind the $27.5 million that the original “Space Jam” made in 1996. But millennials nostalgic for “Space Jam” have something to say about it. While families played a major role with 32% of the audience in CinemaScore surveys being under the age of 18, 40% were in the 18-35 age group.

As expected, the film did better with audiences than critics, with scores for Rotten Tomatoes showing 31% of critics and 83% of audiences while CinemaScore polls yielded an A-.

With “Space Jam 2” a hit with millennials, “Black Widow” is down 69% from its $80 million release last weekend, and made $8 million on its second Friday. That’s an 80% drop from the movie’s $39.5 million gross on Friday’s opening, and steeper than the 72% drop from Friday to Friday that “F9” achieved earlier this month.

Despite this, Marvel Studios surpassed “F9” as the fastest to gross $100 million domestically, doing so in less than a week while current estimates expect a 10-day gross of $130 million after an estimated $24 million in Second weekend.

The third is Sony’s horror movie “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions,” which grossed $3.8 million on Friday from 2,815 locations and is expected to meet studio expectations with an estimated opening of $8.6 million. The film’s reception is 42% critics / 79% audience on Rotten Tomatoes to go with a B on CinemaScore.

Universal Holdovers “F9” and “The Boss Baby: Family Business” completed the top five as “F9” earned an estimated $6.7 million in its fourth weekend and “Boss Baby” earned an estimated $4.4 million in the holiday season. The end of the third week. “F9” has now joined “A Quiet Place – Part II” as the second release after the pandemic grossed $150 million in North America.
