‘Titane’ tops the 2021 Cannes Film Festival Awards

Cannes – Spike Lee was quick to announce the winner of the Palme d’Or “Titan” before the other awards at the Cannes Film Festival Awards. The mixing may have been unplanned and would likely steal the prizes of the usual thrill, but it created a totally unexpected energy as those in the room tried to imagine how they would get the train back on track.

With “Titane,” Julia Ducornau (“Raw”) of the original French genre offers a radical horror vision—a portrait of a car-saturated serial killer disguised as her gender and disguised as the son of a lonely, long-lost firefighter—that is sure to make waves as it is cast into the wider world. This selection marks the second time that a female-made film has topped the show.

The first winner to receive an award was “Nitram” star Caleb Landry-Jones, who took home the Best Actor award for his stunning performance as the Australian Port Arthur Massacre perpetrator. She won the Norwegian Best Actress award, Rinat Rensvi, for her brilliant role in the movie “The Worst Person in the World”.

Leos Carax received the Director’s Award for “Annette”.

Japanese director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi won Best Screenplay for his three-hour adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s “Drive My Car,” which finds new depths in the author’s 40-page short story.

Special jury awards were given to Nadav Lapid “Ahed’s Knee” and “Memoria” by singer Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

The jury chairperson Spike Lee chaired a majority-women group that included French-Senegalese actor and director Mati Diop, American actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal, Austrian director Jessica Hausner, French actress Melanie Laurent, Brazilian actress Kleber Mendonca Filho and French actor Taher. Rahim, South Korean actor Song Kang-ho and French singer Mylene Farmer.

Cannes’ first most prestigious award, the Golden Camera, was awarded to “Morena” by Antonita Alamat Kocijanovic, a story about a Croatian girl who negotiates with a stranger who arrives on her remote island. Selected by a special jury chaired by Melanie Thierry (“Tralala”) among 31 first-time films in all sections of the festival, Martin Scorsese produced the Directors’ Discovery.
