Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has begun to sow mistrust in next year’s elections, alarming lawmakers and courts alike.
Details: In speeches, Bolsonaro, a former military captain, has been questioning the integrity of the electronic voting system in place since 1996 and suggesting that it may not even allow elections to take place.
Former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva is currently the frontrunner on his way to the October 2022 competition.
Leading the news: The Supreme Court has opened an investigation into the Bolsonaro government’s handling of vaccine contracts, and the Senate is holding hearings, which could lead to impeachment – something the majority of Brazilians support.
“Bolsonaro is facing an uphill battle, but it is still too early to exclude him from the controversy,” journalist Gustavo Ribeiro told Axios World.
The latter: Bolsonaro was taken to hospital Wednesday with abdominal pain and hiccups, and will be under medical observation until Saturday.
