George, 26, co-host of the “She Rate Dogs” podcast known for his humorous style about dating, pop culture and his identity as a gay man, was hit by a car and killed in Los Angeles on Saturday in what authorities called a “hit-and-run”.
The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement that the hit-and-run incident occurred in the Beverly Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles around 2:20 a.m.
A pedestrian was walking in an unsigned lane when he was hit by a white BMW and drove off. Police said a bystander died at the scene.
The department did not confirm whether the pedestrian was Mr. George, but the statement said the pedestrian was a 26-year-old Arizona resident. Mr. George graduated from Arizona State University in 2017, according to his LinkedIn page.
Michaela Oakland, friend and co-host of the podcast, confirmed his death on Twitter.
On the show, the hosts exchanged dating stories and shared their thoughts on mental health, “The Bachelorette” and Britney Spears.
“He loved singing along to songs he didn’t know the lyrics to, pretending to be straight on reality dating shows and speaking really bad accents,” Oakland said in a statement.
Ms Oakland said Mr. George wanted to help gays feel accepted because that was what he longed for when he was younger. Auckland said he hosted a weekly online book club and invited all of his followers to join.
In an interview with Shoutout Arizona in December, Mr. George said he wondered if he would be able to support himself after moving to Los Angeles last year to pursue a career in entertainment.
“Towards the end of my college days at Arizona State University, I started sharing my experiences as a gay man with different people I was close to,” he said. “Their reactions made me realize that a lot of these stories were funny to others, which gave me more confidence to start sharing them with more people.”
Abby Govindan, a New York-based comedian and writer, said on Twitter Saturday that Mr. George did not take himself seriously when people made fun of him on Twitter.
“Matt here was relentlessly teased by strangers, but he had an impeccable talent for taking it a step further and turning it into a joke for his followers to laugh at,” said Mrs. Govindan.
Mr. George’s humorous shots often attracted widespread attention on Twitter. Last week, he shared a photo of his mom and Snoop Dogg.
“I’ve been in Los Angeles for a year and haven’t seen anyone famous,” he wrote. “Mom comes for the weekend and meets Snoop Dogg.”
When other users said the man might have looked like a rapper, Mr. George said: “Can everyone stop saying he’s not Snoop Dogg. Mom will be sad the next time you log on to Twitter.”
In 2017, Mr. George drew attention after devising an innovative way to measure the microwave he was selling. When someone on Facebook asked him about the measurements, he posted a picture of vodka bottles next to the microwave for comparison.
“I don’t have a tape measure,” he wrote, “but it’s a fifth the length of New Amsterdam, and a raspberry and mango a fifth of a new morning’s morning.”
According to his LinkedIn page, Mr. George worked as a medical writer in Phoenix, taking medical information from patients, for nearly three years after graduating from college, where he studied biology.
A friend, Isaac Lee, said he hooked up with Mr. George in college because they were both locked up and in the same sibling, Sigma Bay. Mr. Lee said Mr. George would have appreciated that his name was popular on Twitter after his death. He said, “He loved being in the spotlight and he loved making people happy.”
Mr. George was originally from Liberty, Mo. , according to his Facebook page. Mr. Lee said he was born on May 14, 1995. Information about survivors was not immediately available.
The Police Department is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information on a hit-and-run driver.
Ms Auckland said on Twitter that she and Mr. George had recorded another episode of “She Rate Dogs”, but that it was “possibly suspended”.
She said, “I hope going forward that people will continue to talk about Matt and share his stories, because a little bit of the future he wanted can be preserved in this way.”
