Two more Texas Democrats test positive for COVID after fleeing the election

Two Texas Democrats tested positive for the coronavirus during their trip to Washington, D.C., just a day after three of their colleagues learned they had contracted the virus, too.

According to the Texas Tribune, the number of Texas lawmakers infected with the coronavirus in the nation’s capital is now five. The news comes on the same day that Vice President Kamala Harris of Walter Reed Medical Center was dropped off on a “routine” visit after meeting with the group of lawmakers just last week.

A group of Lone Star Democrats fled to deny Republicans in the state legislature a quorum, which refers to the minimum number of legislators needed to carry out legislative work.

In doing so, lawmakers blocked a Republican attempt to pass election integrity legislation that Democrats did not like.

They flew to Washington, D.C., garnered national attention, and were criticized for photos that appeared to be traveling without masks.

In all, more than 50 state lawmakers have made the trip and are said to have been tested after news of the first confirmed case emerged last week.

The bill in question would enhance voter identification requirements for mail-in ballots, which have become a concern in the lead-up to and in the aftermath of the 2020 elections.

It is unclear whether the obstruction attempt will succeed.

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott said he will continue to call for special sessions until the Democrats return. Abbott also said Democrats will be arrested upon their return to Texas.

The Republican governor responded to the idea that the voting rights bill would make it difficult for residents to vote in a tweet Sunday.
