Sometimes people get obsessed with things that are, oh, let’s say stupid or meaningless or totally incorrect, but that’s definitely not what happens with the “debate” surrounding the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road.” No sir, this is a legitimate thing that people interpret in different ways, like this dress or any other example of this phenomenon, and it is not out of our place to say what is the right thing or not… No, just kidding. So obviously something is right here, it’s just that – for four decades – Bruce Springsteen himself was wrong. So here’s a quiz: In “Thunder Road,” what does Mary’s dress do? The screen door just slammed and she dances across the porch like a vision while the radio plays “Only The Lonely,” but what does it do to her dress?

It is clearly “swinging”. Come on. It is in tune with the plays. Swinging is something that dresses do. How can there be any argument? Well, for 46 years, every official version of the lyrics has been saying “waves” rather than “swing” even though that doesn’t go with the rhyme or basic logic. It seems to have been a thing for some time now that Springsteen fans will be arguing about the correct word, as one can be clearly heard in the song but the other is printed on Springsteen’s website and in its official songbook.

David Remnick, writing in The New Yorker, decided to investigate this mystery and try to figure out the correct word by talking to people on both sides of the debate and…yes, it’s a “swing.” Come on. It comes straight from Springsteen’s longtime friend and manager John Landau, who said he was “swinging in” and that “any typos in Bruce’s official materials will be corrected.” He also added that dresses “don’t know how to ‘wave'”. More puzzles should be solved by simply asking the people involved. It seems very easy. Now, can someone figure out the lyrics to “Dancing In The Dark” next? Why can’t you light up Fire without a shark? And in “Born To Run”, who’s this hobo Gus? What’s his deal? And while we’re here, what are literally all the lyrics to “Born In The USA” other than the chorus? This sounds like a fun song about how great America is, but we We just want to check again.
