2 Texas House Democrats who fled the state to block Republican voting bill have COVID-19

Two more Texas Democrats who traveled to Washington, D.C., last week to block a vote on the Republican vote bill, have tested positive for the coronavirus, a report said.

The Texas Tribune reported that the new cases, announced by the Democratic caucus in the Texas House of Representatives late Sunday, are in addition to the three other Democratic lawmakers in the state in flight who have already tested positive for COVID-19.

The affected lawmakers have been fully vaccinated — and one is experiencing mild symptoms, the report said.

Among the two members who have tested positive for the virus, state Representative Trey Martinez-Fischer said.

Today, I received a positive result for my COVID-19 rapid antigen test. I was fully vaccinated, and my test results were negative on Friday and Saturday. He told the newspaper in a statement that I would be quarantined until the test result came back negative, and I am grateful that I only have very mild symptoms.

Democrats in Lone Star State left the state House of Representatives on Monday and traveled on two charter flights to the nation’s capital to scuttle a Republican-backed election reform bill by denying the House a quorum.

While in Washington to await the special legislative session called by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Democrats met with lawmakers in Congress to pressure them to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

Republicans criticized state lawmakers for evading their duties to represent their constituents, and Abbott threatened to arrest them upon their return to Texas in August.
