Samsung’s massive 1000″ MicroLED display features enhanced colors and a slimmer design

Samsung is releasing a new version of The Wall, the huge modular MicroLED display. The new “IWA Series” screen is more than 1,000 inches in size and is aimed at businesses and commercial applications rather than homes, and promotional images from Samsung show that it is being used as a huge screen in a retail environment. The display is available in “select markets” as of today, but Samsung’s press release doesn’t publicly mention a price.

Improvements to this year’s display include LEDs that are up to 40 percent smaller than last year, which Samsung says should result in higher contrast and better color uniformity. The Wall’s color purity has also been improved on the 2020 model, and Samsung boasts a new AI processor that improves image quality and contrast, and removes noise. The docking connections feature an improved wireless design, and the screen depth has been cut in half.

The screen features an 8K resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, and because it’s made up of modular panels, it can be arranged in a number of different configurations, including an ultrawide 15,360 x 2160 16K resolution. Samsung says the new 2021 model can be arranged as concave or convex, or installed in other positions such as suspended, ceiling-mounted or “L”-shaped.

The Wall’s new IWA series is Samsung’s latest display that uses its own MicroLED technology, which relies on an array of self-emitting LEDs to create its image, rather than an LCD layer like most traditional TVs. This means panels can create better black levels by turning off pixels completely, similar to the effect you’ll see from an OLED TV but without the limitations of traditional OLED like the risk of burnout and lower peak brightness compared to LCD panels. Samsung says its latest The Wall has a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits, while LG’s best OLED displays are still at their peak at just under 1,000 nits.

While The Wall is an attempt to sell its massive MicroLED screens to commercial customers, Samsung has also begun to include the technology in traditional-sized TVs for the rest of us. At this year’s CES, it announced a 110-inch MicroLED TV, and later expanded that range to include 76- to 99-inch models. These are still huge TVs, sure, but at least they should be placed on the wall in your home, unlike Samsung’s massive 1000-inch beast.
