Giannis Antetokounmpo dominates. The two-time best player just became the fourth player ever to average 30 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 60% on shooting over five games during the post-season, joining Tim Duncan, Charles Barkley and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. But, unlike those other legends, Antetokounmpo is the only one to do so during the NBA Finals.
Amazingly, just two weeks ago there were questions about whether the Milwaukee Bucks star would be able to play in the Finals. He suffered a terrible knee injury that kept him out for the last two games against the Atlanta Hawks, and he even said he thinks his season is over. After looking shaky in his first game, he’s put an emphatic stamp on each of the past four games. With Antetokounmpo back on form, so have the Bucks, who won three games in a row after trailing 2-0 in the series and are now one home win away from their first title in 50 years.
The last time Milwaukee won it all, they had another good young star on their team. Antetokounmpo may not be Abdul-Jabbar, but they have one thing in common. They propelled their teams to victory with a simple formula: controlling the paint on both ends of the floor. A formula that often portends repeated success on the game’s larger stage.
