The Chicago Police Department on Monday announced a new initiative to combat gun violence after another violent weekend, during which more than 50 people were killed in the city and 11 people died.

Police Chief David Brown has announced that the department will assemble a team of 50 officers that will target gun dealers, straw buyers, notorious licensed firearms dealers and anyone who contributes to bringing illegal weapons into Chicago, ABC News reports.

“The goal of this investigative team – which is new, unique and first in its class – is to get the gun before it hits the streets at the smuggling level,” Brown said at a news conference. “These third parties need to hear me loud and clear: We are coming for you, and we will try to charge you the highest possible cost, if not in the federal system, then in the attorney general’s office.”

Aside from the new team, a 24-hour gun-smuggling guideline will be created to “give Chicagoans a voice to remove these instruments of violence from the streets of Chicago.” According to Brown, “significant payments” will be given to those who tip and lead to an arrest.

ABC notes that there has been an 11 percent increase in shootings in Chicago since the same time last year. Brown said police officers across the country are seeing shooting levels from a moving car that rival those seen in the 1980s and 1990s.

Addressing those who buy illegal guns, Brown added: “Don’t buy guns for violent people that’s our message, or you’re going to pay them by doing what we hope is a dangerous time.”

According to Brown, the new team will work closely with both federal and state authorities to remove weapons pipelines. The team will focus specifically on tracking down who is selling an illegal gun.
