Two American athletes tested positive for Covid-19, days before the Tokyo Olympics start

Cara Ecker, a member of the US gymnastics team, confirmed that she had Covid-19 on Sunday, as her father confirmed to CNN affiliate KMBC by phone Monday morning.

And Katie Lou Samuelson, a member of the US Olympic women’s 3×3 basketball team, announced on Instagram that she would not be able to compete in the games after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

In addition, U.S. Olympic men’s basketball’s Zach Lavigne will not travel with the team to Japan on Monday as planned due to health and safety protocols, United States Basketball Association announced Monday. No other details were revealed, but the NBA team said they hope LaVine can join the team later this week.

The events pose broader challenges to holding the Olympics, which begin Friday amid the outbreak of the pandemic.

Ecker, an 18-year-old alternate member of the gymnastics team, recently arrived in Japan for the games starting Friday.

Her father, Mark Ecker, said that despite not showing any symptoms and being vaccinated, she tested positive for Covid-19 after arriving in Japan.
