Vice President Harris said Tuesday that she has spoken with Republican senators and other Republican leaders about the vote legislation.
Speaking to CBS News, Harris said there is no “bright line” between whomever she talks to about voting rights laws, adding that it is a “partisan issue” and “should be handled in this way.”
“I’ve spoken to Republican senators — elected Republicans and Republican leaders,” said Harris, when asked if she has spoken to members of the Republican Party about a “Act for the People” that has been blocked in the Senate.
Despite this setback, Bill S.1 remains “an essential part of what we need to do to fight for the right to vote,” Harris told CBS.
Frustration in Congress has been exacerbated by the setbacks, with some progressive lawmakers calling for the stalling to be cleared. Harris refused to support disruption reform during her CBS interview, instead saying that “there is a national imperative to pass a Voting Rights Act, and this is the test of our time.”
“Any changes to the disruption would require all Senate Democrats to support those changes,” she added, apparently referring to Senator Joe Mansion’s reference to support for President Schumer’s public lands candidate who on Wednesday set up an infrastructure standoff that should be the electricity standard. Clean “No” Rational Amidst the Severe Climate Impacts MORE (DW.Va.), who has been a staunch opponent of deactivation.
Harris recently met with a group of Texas Democratic lawmakers, who are in Washington, D.C., to block the passage of a state bill that would add further restrictions on voter access. Harris told CBS that she will also meet with Native American and Alaska Native leaders for discussions about voting rights.
“There is a lot of work to be done,” Harris continued. “I add my voice to the chorus in saying that everyone should approach this issue with urgency and a sense of deep obligation to fight back against these efforts to suppress the vote.”
