Brilliant eight: The Duchess of Cambridge snapped a photo of Prince George sitting in a Land Rover Defender to mark his eighth birthday on July 22.
The little prince, who was wearing a striped shirt, was photographed in Norfolk, England, near his parents’ home in Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham district. The Defender is a nod to George’s late grandfather Prince Philip who died in April, two months before his 100th birthday.

The Defender was Philip’s all-time favorite car. A green Land Rover in the woods – which he built himself – carried his coffin to St George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle where the funeral was held.
The Prince has had a lively summer so far in the lead up to his birthday. Last month, he watched the England national football team play at Wembley Stadium.

He cheered for England to beat Germany in the UEFA European Football Championship 2020 match on the field in late June and attended the final, also held at Wembley, earlier this month.
Young George is said to be a huge football fan, which should come as no surprise given his father’s role as head of England’s Football Association.
England’s 2-1 win over Germany in June took the national team into the quarter-finals and gave the country, still in the grip of social restrictions, a much-needed boost. England eventually lost to Italy on penalties.
The bells are set to ring at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the Prince’s birthday, an old royal tradition. The bell was canceled last year due to the lockdown and social distancing restrictions caused by COVID-19.
The last time Prince George heard the bells ring in his honor was on his sixth birthday two years ago.
According to British press reports, the Central Council for Church Bell Ringing (CCCBR) has issued its latest guidelines for bell ringing and it is allowed again, in a well-ventilated area.
