Tommy Dorfman, best known for her role in 13 Reasons Why, is reinventing herself as a trans woman. In a conversation with Detransition, children’s novelist Tori Peters spoke for Time magazine, Dorfman about her gender and identity and how her image, both public and private, has evolved recently. “For a year now, I’ve been personally identifying and living as a woman – a transgender woman,” Dorfman said.
Dorfman said she doesn’t necessarily think of this as an exit — “because I haven’t gone anywhere.” Instead, she said, “I take it today as my reintroduction as a woman, having had a medical transition. Coming out is always seen as such a big revelation, but I’ve never come out. Today is about clarity: I’m a trans woman. Pronouns are he/she.” My name is Tommy.”
If you follow Dorfman on Instagram, you’ll know that she hasn’t hesitated to share her style changes or her enthusiastic support for the trans community. “I’ve been living in this other version of getting out where I don’t feel safe enough to talk about it, so I just do it,” she said. “But I realize transition is beautiful. Why not let the world see what it looks like?” Dorfman described her Instagram account as “a daily time capsule…one that shows the body living in a more fluid space.” However, she recognized the need to speak about her identity in a more formal and articulate manner. “I’ve learned as an audience-facing person that my refusal to explain can strip me of the freedom to control my own narrative. With this medical transition, there’s been talk about my body, and I’m starting to feel overwhelmed.”
Dorfman, who is also an accomplished photographer, added that she was “no longer interested in playing ‘male’ characters.” Her first role will be in Lena Dunham’s upcoming movie, Sharp Stick. Sometimes you just have to say, ‘No, that’s what’ Dorfman told Peters. I’m just on it.”
As for her name, Dorfman will still go to Tommy, a tribute to her late uncle for whom she is named. “I love my name,” she said, “I want to keep my name and give new life to my name.” “I’m really proud of the person I was too. I think it’s important to acknowledge that. I’m proud of who I have been all these years but for so many years.” So let her reintroduce herself, like Tommy: “This is an evolution of Tommy. I am becoming more Tommy.”
