A 14-year-old boy and two other people were killed and 17 others injured in four separate shootings in Chicago on Wednesday, police said.
Chicago Police Supt. On Thursday, David Brown said that few of those injured in every shooting were cooperating with police and urged community members to come forward if they knew anything.
Investigators believe the shooters in each incident were targeting specific victims, although some of the injured were bystanders.
The first of the two shootings occurred within minutes and within two blocks of each other in the city’s North Lundell neighborhood after 6 p.m., Ernest Cato, deputy police chief for District 4, told a news conference.
Police announced the death of the 14-year-old at Stroeger Hospital after being hit in the head in the first shooting, seriously wounding a 16-year-old, according to police. Kato said the injured young man was shot in the head. A 22-year-old man and two 24-year-old men were injured in the shooting near the intersection of 13th Street and Christiana Streets and are in stable condition.
Several suspects then fired on a second scene, shooting four teenagers and a 22-year-old man near the intersection of Douglas Boulevard and Ridgway Avenue. Police said they were taken to hospitals, where they are listed in good condition.
Deputy Chief Detectives Brendan Deenihan said one of those teens, a 14-year-old, was hit by a stray bullet while riding in a car with his father.
“We’re going to need a holistic approach on the deck, and that approach will involve… our community being involved, and saying what’s going on,” Kato said from the second shooting site. “Our community that has cell phone photos, and has information on Facebook. We will need your help.”
Another shooting on the western side of the city killed two men. The men were standing outside in Westtown when someone in a passing SUV shot them. No one was arrested immediately.
Just before midnight, a dark gray Jeep Grand Cherokee opened fire on a party bus at the 1600’s of North LaSalle Drive in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, according to authorities. Eight people, aged between 23 and 52, were injured.
One of the victims was listed in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was rescued after being shot in the chest. The police described him as a 27-year-old man.
While a 24-year-old man was shot in the arm and a 26-year-old woman was seriously injured by a bullet in the leg, the remaining victims were in good or reasonable condition in area hospitals.
Denihan said investigators believe those on the bus were targeted, but he did not provide any details.
He said the bus entered a gas station to allow people to use the bathroom. He said that three cars stopped and people inside started shooting at the bus passengers heading to the building.
Two of the injured were bus company employees, including a security guard. Denehan said another injured person was sitting in a car at the gas station.
No one is under arrest in connection with the party bus shooting.
The Chicago Police Department announced on Monday the formation of a new team of officers, prosecutors and federal agents that will target gun smuggling as part of anti-violence efforts. It came on the heels of another bloody weekend that ended with more than 60 people being shot, including 10 killers.
“Street justice never ends,” Brown said Thursday. “The desire for revenge is never satisfactory. It only hurts. It only corrupts your community. And we want society to come forward now. We are in a battle for the heart and soul of some of our communities and now is the time to speak up.”
While Chicago saw fewer violent crimes such as aggravated batteries, robberies and sexual assaults, homicides so far this year are up 33% compared to the same period in 2019.
Shootings are up 59 percent since the first half of 2019, the most recent similar period since the pandemic began.
This week, the Department of Justice is launching efforts in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. to stem the escalation of gun violence by tackling the illegal trade and prosecuting crimes that help put guns in the hands of criminals.
Attorney General Merrick Garland is expected to travel to Chicago, where he grew up, on Thursday to launch the initiative.
