Alexa’s gentle, feminine voice has filled the homes of millions over the past few years, but now Amazon has finally released a male counterpart to it. Amazon has been late on that — Apple and Google have both offered different voices, both feminine and masculine, in their virtual assistants for years. But late or not, it’s a good idea that Amazon is finally giving Alexa some options.
In addition to the two main Alexa voices, Amazon also has celebrity voices (you can now choose between Samuel L. Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Melissa McCarthy). It is programmed to work with specific phrases and answer specific questions – mostly alarm clocks, timers, jokes, or weather reports. They also cost $5 each. Any query for an Echo device that is not supported by the chosen celebrity’s voice will receive a response from the original Alexa voice.
There are two ways you can change the Alexa voice on Echo devices: with the device itself or through the Alexa app. Note that changing the voice through the device was less reliable for us – and the surest way to do it is through the app.
Changing the voice only applies to the Echo device you’re currently using – if you want to switch to masculine voice on multiple Echo speakers or screens in your home, you’ll have to do it one by one. The Alexa voice used by the smartphone app also cannot be changed; This is the original female voice. Hopefully, in the future, Amazon will add a way to change it globally for all Echo devices in the account.
Without further ado, here’s how to change the Alexa voice on your Echo:
On an Echo or Echo Show: Say “Alexa changes your voice.” If you have more than one Echo device, Alexa will ask you to select the device. Say the name of the device you want to change the sound on. If successful, Alexa will respond with a new voice and confirm that this is what it will look like in the future. If it doesn’t work, Alexa will say something about the “Sorry, [name of your device] It does not support it. In the Alexa app for iOS or Android: Tap the Devices tab at the bottom. Tap the Echo & Alexa button in the top left. Tap the device you want to change Alexa voice on. Tap the Settings cog wheel button at the top right. Scroll down to the Alexa Voice option and tap on it. Choose either Original (female voice) or New (male voice). How to use the celebrity voice: Say “Alexa introduced me to this.” [name of celebrity]. Alexa will switch to the voice of the celebrity you’ve selected and explain things you can do with it. If you want to purchase the voice, you’ll be asked to confirm the charges to your Amazon account. Once enabled, you can say ‘Hey’ [celeb name]To wake your Echo. You can also enable voice on each Echo you want to use it on. Standard Alexa voice is still available if you use the Alexa wake word.
