A shooting in Washington, D.C., injuring two men; The suspect is at large

Police responded Thursday night to the location of the shooting on a street in Washington, D.C., known for restaurants and bars. At least two men suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Officials say the two men are “conscious and breathing,” and are receiving treatment at area hospitals.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed in a tweet that a shooting took place at approximately 8:20 local time at the intersection of 14th Street and Riggs Streets.

Police are looking for a man leaving the scene in what they described as an old black sedan, which was captured on video and posted online. They are asking the public for any additional information about this suspect and possibly anyone else.

Other videos showed the restricted area and first responders at the scene. Police said the shooting was still under investigation. The authorities did not immediately reveal the identity of the suspected gunman or who was shot.

Police Chief Robert Conte of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department was at the scene and held a late-night news conference. He said “more than one bullet was fired” and said at least one of the wounded believed he was the target. The other person was apparently an innocent bystander, Conte said, noting that this is preliminary information.

Conte said police responded to the shootings near restaurants “within five seconds” because they were investigating an earlier shooting in which two weapons were discovered in two separate locations.

One of the diners responded to the shooting and told CBS affiliate WUSA-TV that “these random events will happen.”

Mike Wendell said, “It doesn’t matter if you’re in a dangerous area or a beautiful area. These random events will happen. Anytime. Wherever it is. So, just stay alert and communicate often.”

Customers describe seeing “sparks” and running around inside the restaurant.

Another customer said she saw a young man running and shooting a pistol.

Thursday’s shooting comes days after the shooting outside the stadium as the Washington Nationals were playing the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. This incident led to a panicked scene, as attendees dodge for cover and teams retreat to their clubs. Police said three people were injured in that accident.
