Health officials have warned of an outbreak of “superbug” fungus in Dallas and Washington, DC, that appears to be resisting treatment.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Thursday that there has been an outbreak of the fungus Candida auris at a D.C. nursing home and two hospitals in Dallas, the Associated Press reported.
Three cases in the capital and two cases in Dallas were resistant to all three major classes of drugs.
Both patients in Dallas who had drug-resistant cases died, and one patient in Washington died from a similar condition.
This is the first time we’re beginning to see a combination of resistance, and patients getting infected from each other, said Megan Lyman, CDC medical officer Megan Lyman.
The cases were seen from January to April, and investigators found that the fungus was spread from person to person.
There have been more cases since April and the outbreak is still ongoing, according to the CDC, but no cases have been reported yet.
The fungus has been known for years, but evidence that it can spread from person to person is new.
Hill reached out to the CDC for comment.
