A source has confirmed that New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas may miss matches after ankle surgery

METAIRIE, LOS ANGELES – New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas underwent ankle surgery in June and could miss early season time as a result, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.

Thomas, 28, has been struggling with an ankle injury all last season, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported that he is expected to undergo surgery to repair a torn deltoid and other injured ligaments in his ankle.

It is unclear why Thomas had surgery so late in the season, but the goal is to make a full recovery.

Thomas missed nine games in two separate spells in injured reserve last year after initially injuring his ankle in the first week. He finished 40 passes for 438 yards in the regular season and didn’t catch his first touchdown pass until the playoffs.

The lack of Thomas will add to the difficulty for ferrets James Winston and Tysum Hill as they fight to replace retired Drew Brees. The Saints were already weak on the playmakers after parting with No. 2 wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and tight ends Jared Cook and Josh Hill this season.

The Saints recently created more than $10 million in cover space through contract restructurings and extensions and can look to add another veteran’s broad future as they approach the start of training camp next week. They will also rely heavily on fourth-year receiver Tre’Quan Smith, second-year receiver Marquez Callaway, third-year receiver Deonte Harris and tight end sophomore Adam Trautman, among others.
