As if the expansion of the College Football Extension and the rights to the name, image and likeness weren’t enough to change the sport, another round of conference reorganization appears to be on the horizon. Texas and Oklahoma intend to announce their decision to leave the Big 12 in favor of moving to the SEC within the next “24-28 hours,” sources told CBS Sports Dennis Dodd.
Citing a “high-ranking university official familiar with the situation,” Brent Zwernman of the Houston Chronicle was first to report on Wednesday that the Securities and Exchange Commission may announce the Longhorns and Sooners additions “within two weeks.”
Securities and Exchange Commission Commissioner Greg Sankey, along with officials from Texas and Oklahoma, declined to comment on the initial reports, but there were no outside denials. The smoke is growing steadily with each passing hour. This is despite resistance from some occasional parties, such as Texas A&M (not wanting another Lone Star State team in the SEC) and Oklahoma State (not wanting to be left alone in the Big 12).
The additions of Texas and Oklahoma will make the SEC the first 16-team Super Conference while at the same time adding massive brand strength to a league already seen as the best in college sports. Whether she leaves those programs now or leaves for the SEC specifically, her departure from the Big 12 seems inevitable. CBS Sports will continue to cover this evolving story with updates live below.
