Reorganization rumors: SEC will overwhelmingly approve Texas, OU

[ad_1]

Talk of the college conference reorganization went from relatively dormant to literally city talk overnight this week after the Houston Chronicle reported that Texas and Oklahoma had a keen interest in joining the Securities and Exchange Commission.

As far as reorganization is concerned, what begins as fan fodder for a bar stool quickly becomes a live-action version of musical chairs. The amount of planning and behind-the-scenes planning that was taking place in the months prior to this week is currently unknown (but it would make a great documentary someday if UT&OU ended up jumping ship); But what we do know is that things are now moving quickly, and the teams are worried about being left on the dance floor without a dance partner.

Local Austin columnist Kirk Bowles reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission is willing to offer slots to two of the Big Twelve Dissenters, with Texas A&M being the only holdout. The Aggies rose to fame unlike Big Brother Texas almost a decade ago for joining the Securities and Exchange Commission when the Longhorns were vying for bigger TV deals. Now that A&M is booming and Texas is floundering, little brother has grown up seeing no reason for the Longhorns to be invited to the table. Overturning the additions would require four SEC schools to vote against further expansion, which doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

However, the real question in all of this is what will happen to the remaining 12 teams if the crown jewels of the conference are lapping on greener pastures. According to sources, this week’s call for the leaders of the Big 12 included talks about the possibility of reaching out to other conferences to form “super” conferences.
