Alabama’s Republican governor has made an urgent plea for residents to get vaccinated to slow the increase in Covid-19 cases, becoming the latest GOP official to ramp up calls for vaccinations in the face of vaccine hesitation among conservative voters.
“We have to get people to take the shot,” said Governor Kay Ivey, whose state ranks poorly on Covid-19 vaccination rates. “People are supposed to have common sense. But it’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated people, not the normal people. It’s the unvaccinated people that let us down,” she told reporters Thursday.
Earlier in the week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Kentucky) issued a stark warning: “I want to stress in the strongest way possible,” he said Tuesday. “These bullets should enter everyone’s arm as quickly as possible.”
The strong comments come at a time when the delta formula is causing concern from policy makers and markets. The slowdown in vaccines has frustrated health experts and fueled accusations from Democrats that the Republican Party has not adequately embraced vaccination efforts or addressed skepticism about vaccines in its ranks.
The uptick in Covid-19 cases has touched every state, but it has been observed more prominently in areas with lower vaccination coverage. According to health officials, 99% of Covid-19-related deaths in the United States occur among unvaccinated individuals.
