Biden’s broader remarks focused on his administration’s work to end the pandemic and transform the economy, passing trillions of dollars in infrastructure and social programs like the child tax credit, lowering drug prices and raising taxes for the wealthy to pay for them.
But his focus on Trump in the Virginia out-of-the-year race provided a primer on how he and top Democrats plan to deal with Trump’s long shadow cast on Republicans. In Virginia, Trump endorsed Yongkin on three separate occasions, and Democrats are tipping their fingers that a Biden appearance would lure Trump to hold an event for the Republican candidate.
He continued, “As Democrats, we have to show that we understand, we keep them, and we keep our promises.” “We just have to keep making the case, just as the Republican Party today makes only fears, lies and false promises.”
The rally, in front of a mostly masked crowd of about 3,000 people in Arlington, comes just over 100 days before the election in Virginia, which will put McAuliffe in his bid to come back against Youngkin, the first-time candidate and former CEO of the Carlyle Group.
Biden’s speech opened with a focus on the pandemic and the increasing cases of coronavirus across the country. “What we have now is a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” he said, adding that “a lot of our conservative friends” had seen the Lord while adopting the vaccinations. He noted Alabama Governor Kay Ivey’s frustration with “unvaccinated people” in her state.
Commonwealth gubernatorial elections have almost always blocked the way for the ruling party. Over the past 40 years, only one candidate has won the governorship while his party has controlled the White House: McAuliffe, who scored a slim victory in 2013.
“This out-of-year election, looks like the country,” Biden said.
Biden and his aides are keen to use the race to show that the president will commit to party building, in hopes of avoiding vote blotting. The rally came on the heels of the Democratic National Committee’s announcement of spending at least $5 million in Virginia before the election, which the party called “the largest investment in the Commonwealth in history.”
Public opinion polls in the race have been sparse, but it is expected to be closer than Biden’s 10-point victory over Trump – and outgoing Governor Ralph Northam’s runaway victory in 2017 – with McAuliffe as the slim candidate.

Publicly, McAuliffe and his team maintained that this race is neck and neck. “I need your help,” he told the crowd. “I want you to work every day and night. Sleep is overrated.”
McAuliffe and other Virginia Democrats have also sought to link Yongkin to Trump.
“Why are Glen Yongkin and Donald Trump so close?” McAuliffe said at the rally.
McAuliffe’s letter also focused heavily on economics during his tenure at Richmond. He also praised the recovery package from the Corona virus. “The US bailout has injected new life into our economy,” McAuliffe said.
The rally also comes a day after McAuliffe released his first television advertisement for the general election. AdImpact, an ad tracking company, has tracked at least $525,000 in television ad spending from McAuliffe that began Thursday and continues through next Wednesday. In the ad, McAuliffe called Youngkin a “Donald Trump loyalist.”
Meanwhile, Yongkin has been on the air almost uninterruptedly since the Democratic primary in early June — and didn’t dispute until this week.
