This week, deadly floods hit China’s Henan province, killing at least 33 people. New footage shows flooding in Zhengzhou, home to the largest iPhone assembly plant. Experts say severe flooding in Europe and China is a result of the climate crisis. Something is loading.

Floods swept through China’s Henan province this week after eight months of rain fell in just 24 hours during a storm that publications described as a “once in a thousand years event” that left “scientists stunned”.

The Washington Post, citing local officials, reported that severe flooding in China killed at least 33 people and displaced hundreds of thousands, as residents were evacuated by rescue teams across the region. The Associated Press reported that historic floods have damaged many communities in Europe, killing more than 200 people.

New BBC drone footage shows flooding in Zhengzhou, an industrial town known as the “iPhone City”. An estimated 350,000 residents work there at the largest iPhone assembly plant, which produces nearly half of Apple’s most popular products. Many workers live on factory campuses.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Twitter that the company would “donate to support relief efforts” in Germany, Belgium and Western Europe. Apple did not immediately respond to an Insider’s request for comment on how it was responding to floods in China.

Zhengzhou iPhone factory is operated by Foxconn Technology Group, a company in Taiwan. Foxconn did not immediately respond to an Insider’s request for comment.

Foxconn told the Wall Street Journal that it has implemented an emergency response plan for flood control. According to the newspaper, water entered the factory and the electricity was cut off.

Videos show people stranded inside the flooded Zhengzhou subway system, killing 12 people, according to the BBC. The BBC reported on Friday that footage of rescue workers rescuing a four-month-old girl has spread in China. The BBC, quoting the Beijing Youth Daily, said the girl’s mother was found dead “frozen in a position that appears to have been lifting something”.

Experts say severe weather around the world this week is a result of the climate crisis. According to Apple’s latest environmental report, the company is converting its entire manufacturing supply chain to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, including suppliers such as Foxconn.
