BEIJING (Reuters) – Typhoon In Fa hit China’s east coast south of Shanghai on Sunday after evacuating people living near the sea, canceling flights and trains and ordering the public to stay indoors.
State TV, citing the National Meteorological Agency, reported that the typhoon made landfall in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Precipitation is expected from 10-14 inches.
“People should not go out voluntarily,” the office said.
The typhoon earlier dumped rain on Taiwan and downed tree branches, but no deaths or injuries were reported.
About 330,000 residents of Fengxian District, located on the southern edge of Shanghai, were evacuated after winds offshore reached 60 miles per hour, China Daily reported.
State television reported that hundreds of flights at Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao airports were canceled and more were expected on Monday. Shanghai closed parks and the riverside Bund, a popular tourist area.
Typhoon In-fa canceled many flights as it finally made landfall along China’s east coast on July 25, 2021.
The international airport in Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, also canceled flights.
State TV reported that train service to the coastal city of Ningbo, south of Shanghai, has been suspended. The Zhoushan Bridge connecting the islands near Ningbo, as well as schools, markets and businesses in Zhejiang Province, have been closed.
On Saturday, large container ships were flown out of Shanghai’s Yangshan port, one of the world’s busiest shipping hubs. State TV said a ship lock in Nantong, which borders Shanghai to the north, had stopped launching ships in the Yangtze River.
