An asteroid the size of the Giza pyramid, to pass the Taj Mahal ‘close’ to Earth

NASA said a massive asteroid is set to pass “close” to Earth on Sunday.

The 2008 GO20 asteroid is between 318 and 720 feet (220 meters) high and has made comparisons with a number of world famous structures to express its size, including the Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The asteroid is hurtling through space at 18,000 miles per hour and could get as close to Earth as 2.8 million miles, putting it in “Apollo,” a close-to-Earth designation. NASA is closely monitoring the progress of the asteroid.

For comparison, Earth’s moon is 238,855 miles from the planet, Venus is 126.11 million miles away, and Mars is 236.5 million miles away, according to NASA.

You don’t have to worry about distance, though: An asteroid passed 1,830 miles above the Indian Ocean in August 2020, Space.com reports.

However, the distance can shrink due to the gravitational pull of the planets as the asteroid passes through the solar system. However, the concern is about a future collision rather than any concern about Sunday’s passing.

The asteroid GO20 of 2008 has passed through the system before, passing within 1 million miles of Earth on August 4, 1901 and just over 1 million miles away on July 13, 1935, Live Science reports.

Asteroids are leftover debris from the formation of the Solar System, so various oddly shaped rocks rotate within the system and pass through Earth from time to time.
