It is a popular word that sums up the relations between one nation, two states, Azerbaijan and Turkey. These four words remind us that if a task is not difficult enough for Wales, they will be able to play in front of a partisan crowd in Istanbul when they face Turkey in Baku. Do not forget that this week the Turkish flag was delicately raised at the entrance to the Tofig Bahramov Stadium, a training base in Galler.
Turkey is Azerbaijan’s largest ally and relations are deep culturally, historically and politically. In a brief but bitter war with Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region last year, Azerbaijan gained military muscle from Turkey, and on Tuesday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited the conflict-torn city of Shusha to sign a trade and security alliance.
In Tuesday’s match, Erdogan will be a guest at the Olympic Stadium with more than 30,000 spectators, most of whom are rooted in Turkey. On the walk here, the Welsh flag alone hangs on the windows of the hotel, but Zaha Hadid stands side by side at the junction on the edge of the stunning Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by Azeri and Turkish flags. Turkey played a friendly against Azerbaijan, who won 2-1 in Alanya last month, and many locals who support Turkish teams and watch Turkish television will be left behind by what appears to be their big brothers to suffocate several hundred brave Wales on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Turkish Captain Burak Yilmaz openly thanked the Azerbaijani people. First of all, I want to start by saying that we are friends and brothers thanks to the citizens of Azerbaijan. Since we came here [in Baku] we felt it. We were 100 percent guests in Italy from the beginning. [This game] we will be at home and create a world of difference. The people of Azerbaijan are with us, they will give us great feelings and we can win with their help.
Shooting star
Former Galler and Galatasaray striker Dean Saunders says a ball shining like a star in a game at Trabszonspor, the noise is deaf and the smoke from the flames in the stands weakens his eyesight. In the age of the coronavirus, a half-full pot is not conducive to creating a similar environment, but Galler knows that they have to play the game, not take this opportunity.
Galler’s defender Ethan Ampadu says he doubts it will be a positive atmosphere for us. This can be a shock [for some players] but before we all played in front of the crowd. We all know what to expect.
Gareth Bale is looking forward to it. He says they have learned to play away games and be in front of an enemy crowd. If anything, it encourages us to be a little more ruthless on the field, and hopefully we can silence them.
Turkey has its own problems. Italy’s 3-0 defeat in the opening match of the European Championship is crucial to beating Wales to advance to the knockout stages of a major tournament for the second time since taking third place under Senol at the 2002 World Cup. The current manager is the Sun.
It will be especially difficult after the last game, says Welsh defender Joe Rodon. They will want to go on fire. Same for us. We want to go out and win.
The sun is expected to change. Ozan Kabak could replace Merih Demirali in central defense, and the speed of Roma striker Cengiz Under, who spent last season on loan at Leicester, could help Turkey get past Galler. More is expected than Zeki Celik, who won Ligue 1 with Lille last season, and AC Milan midfielder Hakan Chalhanoglu.
A young Turkish team was canned by the national press for their ridiculous games against Italy. Still, Turkey beat Brazil in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, and there is no doubt that they will not be able to play worse than on Friday, a defeat for striker Kenan Karaman and defender Umut Meras. It is true to say that Galler expects Turkey to make noise. Ampadu smiles and says that it would be good if we all had a megaphone on our field.
I am satisfied
In March, Turkey defeated the Netherlands 4-2, Norway 3-0 in the World Cup qualifiers and took four points from France in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, conceding three goals in 10 games. He admits that they have fallen seriously by solar standards, and Calhanoglu insists they learned from their mistakes after the team meeting. Yilmaz says that we will show who we are, you will see our game.
Galler last played against Turkey, came out on the wrong end of a 6-4 defeat in the 1998 World Cup qualifiers. Robert Page, currently the interim manager of Wales, was in the starting lineup. Saunders, Nathan Blake and Robbie Savage were also on the scoreboard and will be at the media level in this match as well. Bobby Gould defended Ryan Giggs to left-back and Gary Speed and sent off Neville Southall in the second half of the game.
Galler knows there is no difference this time around.
