The Indian Table Tennis Federation on Tuesday called Manika Batras a decision not to take the help of coach Soumyadeep Roy in his Tokyo Olympics as an undisciplined act, and he will certainly face action when its board meets early next month.
Roy, a 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Arjuna Award winner, is the only coach to travel to Tokyo with a four-member team.
Batra had taken his personal coach to the Sanmay Paranajpe games, but he was only allowed to train with him, and the organizers refused to get on his field at the players ’request.
It is certainly a disciplined activity. He should have let the national team coach sit next to the field during his matches just like the other players. Roy has been one of the best players in India and is a renowned coach.
The board will soon meet in practice and decide to take action against him for this discipline, TTFI Secretary General Arun Kumar Banerjee told the Tokyo PTI.
TTFI’s action against a high-profile player is still visible, but it is certain that the participation of all Indian players will be made mandatory for national camps.
Batra attended national camps in Sonepat before the games for just three days, when the camp lasted more than three weeks.
Sure, G Sathiyan, who lost in the opening round, also decided to train with his personal coach like Batra. Unlike Batra, Roy was seen sitting on the corner of Sathiyan during his second round encounter.
The Games ’India campaign ended on Tuesday when veteran Sharath Kamal went to fight reigning champion China Ma Long 32. round.
Batra, ranked 62, also managed to reach the 32nd round after winning world number 32 in the second round. Roy happens to be Sutirtha Mukherjee’s personal coach, who lost in the second round at his first Olympics.
Manika played well and we are proud of his accomplishments, but he did wrong because he didn’t have Roya next to him, Banerjee added.
