Ireland celebrates victory over Middlesex in 1997 – a famous moment in Mike’s coaching season
It is very sad to learn of the death of Mike Hendrick – a man – who was a key figure in the rise of Irish cricket in the modern era.
Here are just a number of tributes to Mike from the Irish cricket family.
Pictured on the left is the famous Irish cricket milestone reached during Mike’s coaching season – it was Ireland Men’s first victory in the professional team competition. #RIPHendo
More honors will be added as they come.
Ross McCollumThe chairman of Irish cricket said:
Although I was not personally involved in cricket at the highest levels in Ireland during Mikes, I met Mike on several occasions. His reputation and legacy rise greatly to the Irish cricket story of modern times. Mike put us on the right path to success and brought a much more professional attitude to everything we did. He had an excellent career playing in the water, but on behalf of Irish cricket, he deserves to be remembered as a key figure on the rise on the world stage.
Brian Walsh, A former president of Irish cricket, said:
“I had the pleasure of sharing an office on the Sports Council with Mike from 1998 to 2000, when he left in 2000. I found him to be very helpful in my work as Director of Development for Northern Ireland.”
“My first memory of Hendo was his passion and knowledge of the game. He was great at pulling ideas away and never had advice. He also participates in and assists in our initiatives that we took. He wanted to give young people a chance and really enjoyed working with young fighting players like Mark Patterson and Ryan Eagleson. “
“One of his initiatives, which proved very fruitful, was the end-of-season tour he organized to play for county teams in the county. He just picked up the phone, talked to some of his old contacts, arranged dates, grounds and the strength of the opposition he wanted to play. these trips to blood actors who thought he might have what it takes to represent Ireland. He would take a few current international players and a lot of promising young players to watch them cope with the pressure. “
“Many of his friends had a farewell dinner at Dunmurry Golf Club for Mike before he left, which turned out to be a wonderful evening. The evening ended with a big speech by the man himself as he expressed his love for Ireland and appreciated the reception he had received during this time.”
“We’ve been following reports of Mikes’ illness in recent years very sadly. I know all his friends in the north have good memories of Hendo.”

Sad news. Hendo was an attractive figure and friend to Irish cricket, and he was also the editor of a devastating foot trimmer. Condolences to the closest and dearest. https://t.co/JRVlkOiyUJ
