ARLINGTON, Texas Madison Bumgarner erected a four-hit ball over seven innings to win for the first time in 2 1/2 months and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Wednesday night as both teams scratched their top shots from the start lineups.
Arizona traded third baseman Eduardo Escobar, the only All-Star this season, to Milwaukee Brewers for two chances.
Two days before the trade deadline, the Rangers pulled Joey Gallon for non-medical reasons just minutes before the game. One person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press that the New York Yankees had reached an agreement to acquire an All-Star snail. The person spoke anonymously because the change had not yet been announced and he had to accept the patient records of the players involved.
David Peralta and Daulton Varsho hit home alone for the Diamondbacks, who won despite getting just three hits. They only won for the fourth time in 25 single-round matches they have played this season.
Bumgarner (5-6), who turns 32 on Sunday, threw 61 of 84 fields on strike in his first win since May 11th. He had four strikes and one walk.
Tyler Clippard, who returned from a 60-day injury among July 21, began a fruitless ninth inning to record his first rescue after July 22, 2018.
Varsho broke the 2-2 draw, leading the eighth. He pulled the fifth field of his season into the right field seats as the first batter in front of Brett Martin (2-3).
Texas starter Jordan Lyles returned after letting his second-year home trip to Peralta limit Arizona to two stages with two hits in seven innings.
Peralta started 0-2 on the fifth in the fifth year and the first since 15 May. It was the 25th home manager awarded this season by Lyles, who ranks second in the biggest leagues in this class.
Texas took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Adolis Garcia, unbeaten in his previous 15 bats, led by a double to the left center. The All-Star newcomer scored Nathaniel Lowen from the left side of the field. Lowe reached third place with Andy Ibanez’s double and scored on a Charlie Culberson sacrificial flight.
The D-Backs leveled the score 2-2 to seventh. Josh VanMeter led by a double and stole the third, the invitation was accepted after a Texas challenge before he finally found Andrew Young’s victim fly. Lyles had loaded the bases on foot for Christian Walker and Peralta.
