Gabe Brkic is one of the country’s leading propellers

We hope the third time is a charm for an Oklahoma footballer Gabe Brkic.

Brkic is about to start his junior season with the Sooners and for the third year he will be the pre-season candidate for the annual Lou Groza Awardthat goes to the best kicker in college football.

Twice the Oklahoma kicker has been a Groza Award semi-finalist, and the junior Chardon of Ohio has all the stuff to cross that ceiling in the 2021 season.

Brkic led the top 12 kicks on Earth last season. 20 goals were scored in 26 attempts in more than 11 matches and a long 54. He finished third nationally a year ago, averaging 2.0 goals per game. In his freshman season in 2019, he set a school record that scored all 17 of his field goals.

In 2019, Brkic received the first group All-America honors from CBS Sports and was named Freshman All-America Sporty and the American Football Writers Association. He wasn’t the team’s starting player to start the 2019 season, but he took the position in the second game of the season.

Last season, Brkic earned the first team’s All-Big 12 decorations and was voted on the Preseason All-Big 12 team this year.

He kicked four field goals at least 50 yards last season, including a 54-yard Sooners Big 12 Championship win in Iowa State. The 54-yard field goal was the fourth longest in OU football history and the longest since 1990.

Brkic is one of 30 college kickers around the country, but only two of the Big 12 who are pre-season nominees for the 2021 Lou Groza Award. The Oklahoma kicker has never won an award.
