ACC football season 2021 season location preview: Defensive line

After a month of watching the offensive side of the ball, we’ve now switched to defense as part of our weekly position reviews that dropped the start of the Syracuse Orange football season. You’ve already read a lot about the SU line of defense earlier this week. So what about the other D-lines in ACC?

Last week, the line of attack of oranges was compared to other ACCs, and things didn’t look good. Now Syracus’ line of defense was compared to the rest of the conference.

In recent years, the best performers

The ACC had a very experienced defensive linemen on the field last year, and many of these players placed large numbers. During the season, six D-liners collected at least 12 tackles against the loss, as leader Virginia Techs Amar Barno 16. Miami Jaelen Phillips had 15.5, while another Hurricane Quincy Roche had 14.5 as well as Pittsburghs Rashad Weaver (you should know Weaver because three of these came against orange).

The Pro Football Focus awards can tell us about last season’s top defensive players, narrowing things down to interior and edge defenders alone, and not just relying on simple counting metrics like sacks and losses (though they really matter, clearly). These figures show that ACC liners, who had at least 385 clicks in defense last year, NC States Alim McNeil was the only player to finish over 90 (he had 90.7). Weaver and Phillips followed him, then Clemsons Myles Murphy and Roche from Miami. Perhaps unsurprisingly, four out of five heard their names before the end of the fourth round in April NFL draft.

Who will succeed in 2021?

The name, which was not called, however, is Murphy, and he returned with Clemson to compete for the entire conference and American honors as one of many of the greatest players in this Tigers defense. Last year’s conference TFL leader Barno has returned as well, as did Xavier Thomas, who was a third-team All-ACC player in 2019 and was then restricted last year due to COVID complications.

North Carolina Tomon Fox and brother Miles Fox at Wake Forest both should stand out this year as well, after each drop in last year’s 10-year loss. Calijah Kancey could secretly be one of the Pitt Summit conferences, and Marcus Valdez is also returning to the edge of Boston College. Nesta Jade Silvera is one of the league’s best defenders on the line, with no weak points in the game at all.

Top three units: 1. Clemson, 2. North Carolina, 3. Pittsburgh

Mentioned Clemson above, and you’ll probably see a lot of the Tigers in the coming weeks as we talk about defense. While the crime remains good, defending it this year is a proven commodity, and Brent Venables, of course, knows how to get the most out of it at this point. Murphy, Bresee, Thomas and tackle Tyler Davis are all tributes to competitors and their reservations may well be, frankly.

In Tomon Fox and Raymond Vohasek, UNC has two of the top 16 return lines at the PFF defense level, and both have significant throughput. Another Fox brother, Tomari, also seems ready to break out this year as high heels seem likely to improve from the front. Pitt will replace the key songs when Weaver and Patrick Jones II leave for the NFL, but players have to do it. Kancey got the mention mentioned above, but Devin Danielson should join him in a huge running stop group in the middle of the Panthers defense.

Three lower parts:. State of Florida, 13. Louisville, 14. Duke

Last year, Louisvilles ’rise was largely driven by a linebacker game, with Jared Goldwire being the only liner crew to collect more than three tackles against a loss. The only other Cardinal D linemen with more than two are Yaya Diaby, and he’s the only one coming back.

The states of Florida have longed for a transfer market to fix some listing issues, and that includes an exciting addition to Georgia-based Jermaine Johnson. He started just four of 21 matches with the Bulldogs, but accumulated eight TFLs (7.5 sacks) and 24 QB pressures during that time. The Dukes actually have some pieces with Derrick Tangelo and Ben Frye, but it compensates for most of the edge pressure, and he doesn’t have much experience plugging in there.

Where is Syracuse Located?

Honestly, it can be closer to the middle part (7-10 range), even if I went here, I didn’t see a path to it. As discussed in the Orange-specific preview, Syracuse still stopped behind the line last year (was the top 40 team in the TFL). And for another year for players to adapt to the new system, this group of veterans could become a lot. Another big sign of the rise of SU? Five of the top 25 returning edges or interior defenders (per PFF overall defense levels) are members of this Orange team. It’s not the end, all. But that would seem to indicate that these groups are potentially much better than what recent years played and the raw census statistics showed us.
