TOKYO (AP) For the fourth consecutive Olympics, Chinese men have swept gold and silver medals in table tennis in singles.
Ma Long defended his Olympic victory on Friday by beating his teammate and best player Fan Zhendong 11-4, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, 11-7.
The match was full of exceptional exchanges, often intensified as both men fired powerful, rotating blows towards each other, glowing successful returns time and time again. The upper limit of the victory point was often a victory cry and a fist pump.
Between games, Ma spoke to himself, drinking water and wiping sweat from his face.
After winning the match, Ma made a heart shape with his arms. He and Fan then raised the Chinese flag together.
Previously, German veteran Dimitrij Ovtcharov won his second bronze medal and also finished third in the 2012 London Games by defeating 19-year-old Taiwanese Lin Yun Ju.
On Thursday, Chen Meng defeated his Chinese teammate Sun Yingshan and took gold in the women’s singles. Chinese women have won all the gold in the singles Olympics.
The Tokyo Games once again underscore the dominance of Chinese doubles, but disappointing the Rio de Janeiro Olympics when China won all four gold medals in the sport. In the huge victory of the host state, Japan won the Chinese gold in a confusing duel.
