Dina Asher-Smith was unable to hold back her tears as she withdrew from the Olympics with a thigh injury after failing in the 100m final.

Asher-Smith told the BBC he did not intend to compete in the 200-meter race, where he is the world champion, after his discussions with his coach John Black. He also revealed that he had kept the extent of his thigh injury at the GB trials a secret, such as his desire to compete for Team GB at the Tokyo Games.

I think I’ll probably leave 200, he said. I’m going to pull it out. John has told me no. Apparently I’m so disappointed I didn’t make it to the finals, he added to BBC Radio 5 live. That’s all I’ve been practicing for the last two years. The last two weeks of my life have been completely insane. I wanted to come and be completely in front of everyone on my form.

Repesin [the hamstring] pretty bad. I was told it would take surgery and the return would take 3-4 months. I went and got another opinion and it was a small misdiagnosis. It was not a fracture. My elbow was still closed. I left: Oh, I can’t go to Maybe I can.

But even though Asher-Smith got to Tokyo, he wasn’t convincing in the warm and qualified joint 11th fastest after 11.07 seconds. Although he promised after he had more to come, he only succeeded in the 11.05 semi-finals, not enough for one of the fastest places to lose.

He lost to second Team GB runner Daryll Neita, whose 11-second steady time earned him the fastest losing point to secure the British on the starting line. They finished eighth and last in the finals, at 11.12.

Apparently I wasn’t a normal self, Asher-Smith added. I was in really good shape [before the trials], the shape of my life. I felt like I was winning this. But I had a weakness when I was told: It’s impossible for you to be there and then: There’s a chance. It’s been a journey. I’m so proud to have come here and ran 11 seconds of a few weeks of exercise.

Third British newcomer Asha Philip came in eighth in the second set at 11.30 and did not make it to the finals.
