The Manchester Originals are still invincible, although Sophie Ecclestone has done her best
The fire of Wales 124 1 (Matthews 71 *, Redmayne 38 *) won Manchester Originals 120 for 6 (Ecclestone 31 *) with nine throws
The fire got off to a great start thanks to Matthews, who hit the ground hard again and achieved his goal with nine throws and 12 balls. This loss means that the Originals still have a win in the tournament.
Fire was great on the field in powerplay, with only 21 runs coming from the first 25 balls. Lizelle Lee had crushed the first two set balls to four, but from there Fire kept things very tight. The originals only found the boundary with the 36th ball of the innings.
Fire managed to pick up the early fairways with Lee running out in the first five installments, and Emma Lamb also went into powerplay, which created a sound for a tight performance
Harmanpreet Kaur played the anchoring role of the originals and made 26 balls out of 32 balls, but no dough was set. Mignon du Preez looked impressive and made a steady 24 before beating the ball from Georgia Hennessey halfway.
It was Ecclestone that took the Originals over 100 and to a point they had some hope of defending. His innings included a sharp shot over the midwife after Hennessy’s full throw. Fire shared throws all over with Hennessey, finishing the best numbers 2 and 24 out of his 20 balls.
The Originals had moments when the unbeaten partnership of 101 between Matthews and Redmayne could have been broken, especially as du Preez pulled a stunning one-handed catch from Laura Jackson deep, but it was considered a non-ball. Because it was, both strikers easily took their team to the winning target.
