TOKYO Katie Zaferes remembers for the first time when she saw a mixed triathlon at the German World Cup. He wasn’t on the team, but watching it made him chills.
He was involved in the Tokyo Olympics The U.S. team that won silver at the event. Zaferes was a personal bronze medalist and was grateful for the opportunity to participate in its Olympics.
I think it’s just amazing for our sport and when I can introduce it to so many other people. Because we all love it and know how special it is compared to an individual, said Zaferes, who combined with Kevin McDowell, Taylor Knibb and Morgan Pearson on a sprint trip.
I think it’s just an amazing event.

Around these games, men and women joined new events that the International Olympic Committee has sought to increase gender equality.
Nine different events in seven sports were added to these Olympics, in everything from archery to judo and table tennis. Many of them have competed in the World Sports Championships or the Youth Olympics before being added to the Games.
About 49% of the 11,000 athletes are women. Men have nine more events here than women, which means they have 27 medals more, according to Olympic historian Bill Mallon.

While the events do not close the gap between the medals received by men and women, the IOC hopes that the creation of the events will encourage National Olympic Committees to invest in women’s sport in a way that is not necessarily out of the reach of these medals.
We loved them at the Youth Games for many of them when they were introduced, said Olympic CEO Christophe Dubi. They were introduced for a reason. We knew it would increase spirit, gender balance, and you know how committed we are to gender balance. And guess what? We love them here too.
They led to interesting and interesting competitions.
In swimming, Britain won the first 4×100 medley message. Teams can choose which legs to put men and women, leading to a strange sight in the 100-meter freestyle gold medalist Caeleb Dressel competes in the women’s field on the last leg.
Judo added mixed teams of three men and women, while shooting sports added events with one man and woman.
In athletics, all but one country chose men to run their starting and anchor legs 4×400 relay, which Poland won.
Athletics is divided between men and women, said Kendall Ellis, who ran the second part of the U.S. Bronze Medal message. It’s nice to be able to get together and gather the best of both sexes and see what we have. “
Kaylin Whitney, who ran the third leg, added, and it just adds excitement to the games. “
It also adds medals to smaller countries. The United States and China, fighting for the top of the medal table, each won four medals in mixed-format events.
But a total of 17 countries won 27 medals, including San Marino, the Dominican Republic and Poland, all of which had a total of two medals on Sundays.
While no new miscellaneous events have been announced for the upcoming Olympics, they are not going anywhere. They allow the IOC to add medals without adding quota seats, as teams already make up qualified athletes.
And they add to the excitement, said Dubi, who spent Saturday morning glued to the office receiver to watch a triathlon mixed message, an 80-minute whirlwind of women and men, each performing a sprint trip.
It was awesome. What you see, the spirit that emerges from these events, we just love them, Dubi said. So really committed to gender balance. Mixed events are part of this work and they are here to stay.
