Boys’ Hockey: Akwesasnes Terrance competes with a US under 17 men’s team in Switzerland | High school sports

He guided them easily, Phillips said. They couldn’t catch him.

While it’s not lacrose, Terrances ’racing and athletic talent have put him on the U.S. men’s under-17 hockey team. The team has 20 players who participated in the USA Hockeys BioSteel Boys Select 16 Player Development Camp. There, they were searched and selected for a team competing in a five-country tournament for under-17s in Vispi, Switzerland on 17-21. August.

The United States, the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland will compete in the tournament. The United States has won seven titles in the competition since 2007 (2010-13, 2015-17).

It hasn’t hit me completely. I think when I’m there and I’m with the team, it hit me when I put on the USA shirt, Terrance said. I’ve never been abroad, so it’s going to be awesome.

Phillips coached Terrance in a small box lodge for three years (2017-19) at Akwesasne Storm. He has never coached him in hockey.

But even in the lacrosse competition, Terrances danced and crashed across the floor.

(It was left out) very easily, Phillips said. He’s so fast. And he’s smart.

He was the fastest child on the team. Every time.

But its durability, coupled with Terrances ’speed, can be such a rarity, Phillips said.

In general, kids who can win in a sprint (who can) be in the first (sprint) usually can’t in a marathon, Phillips said.

But (Terrance) can do both. He’s probably one of my two kids who could do it.

The only other player Phillips compared to Terrance athletically is Lyle Thompson’s National Lacrosse League striker Georgia Swarm.

I get one or two kids who could stay close (Terrance) in the sprint, but not in endurance, Phillips said. There really is no one near him.

Carey, the elder, and Ashley Terrance put their son on the skates as soon as he was able to walk. At about 18 months of age, Carey Jr. wandered around two pairs of blade poles. At the age of 3, he was on the ice, his father said.

It was always natural for him, Carey Sr. said. His skating has always been his strength.

Although he attended Salmon River Central School Carey Sr.’s alma mater (graduated in 2000) last year, Terrance, Jr., who is going to a junior school year, did not play hockey for Shamrocks.

My dad (is a role model) and still teaches me the most I know, Terrance Jr. said.

Terrance Jr., who last fitted a Kemptville 73 (18U), moved home last year to the U.S. state of Akwesasne after moving to Toronto in eighth grade. He previously attended The Hill Academy in Ontario. Last year, he played for the Toronto Titans in the Greater Toronto Hockey League before the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic suspended games.

More hockey will come to Terrance Jr. in the near future when he returns from Switzerland. In the latest draft of the Ontario Hockey League, the Pennsylvania-based Junior team Erie Otters took her 10th overall.

Terrance, who grew up a fan of Ottawa Senators, hopes to one day get a call from the professional team. His next goal is that one day the NHL team will call him.

Carey the parent is most proud of her son’s work ethic.

Starting hard work is the hardest task for a hockey player today, Terrance Sr. said. If you want to take your game to the next level, you really have to invest in work that other kids aren’t ready to do.

Terrance Jr. will leave for Vispi on Tuesday. Currently, in addition to competitions, he is most excited to meet new people.

There are children everywhere. The biggest thing for me is just meeting new friends, he said.
