Alexander Bublik is one of the most entertaining players in the ATP round, with his ability to shoot underarms. While fans may remember Kazakhstan’s tricks the most, he has more aces than anyone so far, and 576 players took part in the Citi Open this week.
“It’s a great state. Leading aces after almost eight months is great,” Bublik said. “It means I can serve. That means I can hit eaters. “
Before the ninth seed begins to run in Washington, ATPTour.com found out Bublik what his life is like on the Tour, his favorite holiday destinations, and why he’s trying to focus solely on tennis on the field.

What are the two non-tennis accessories you always pack for travel?
It is my wedding ring and my watch. I buy and sell. I bought the first one [watch] in 2017. Since then, I have had a lot. I am a great watch enthusiast. I love watches, I love buying and selling them. I love all kinds of things. Right now, I may have four or five clocks, but I’ve had a lot more.
Do you enjoy traveling around the world or do you just consider it something that needs to be done to be a professional player? If you like what you enjoy traveling?
I don’t like traveling at all to be honest with you. I’m not a big packer, flying and changing time zones, but I consider it part of the job. I do not like it. I was happy to be home for six months. I was very happy, it was really good for me. I would stay home for another six months if necessary. For me, traveling is just part of my job to live.
How do you try to beat jetlag and adapt to your local time zone?
It’s not hard for me. I do well in time zones, but I just don’t like traveling. I like to travel from my home to the Alps and back by car for five or six hours. I’m not a guy who would go to the Maldives, a 15 hour trip to lie under the sun for 15 days.
Where is your favorite vacation spot in this case?
French Alps, Swiss Alps, ski resorts. Something that isn’t mainstream and you don’t see hundreds of tennis players and athletes there. Something interesting to walk, to see nature.
I go to the mountains, I enjoy nature. Of course it’s a great hotel, though [I like] to walk around. Unfortunately I don’t know how to ski or snowboard, but I love nature. It’s great to charge, put the phone away. I think the best places are these cold resorts for skiing or in the Swiss Alps.

What is your favorite tournament city and why?
ATP hosts tournaments in very good locations, so usually it’s always in good cities. There are cities I don’t like [because of] weather or conditions or other things, but overall, 95 percent of ATP tournaments are held in great locations. We have great hotels [too].
As a tennis player, maintaining your body is extremely important, so how do you take care of it on long trips?
Sleep well, and a couple of glasses of wine never hurt. I try not to hold on to a tennis player, always taking care of myself, my body, my tennis. When you travel, you should try to be a normal person and do whatever a normal person would do on a 14 hour flight.
Do you do any routines or activities to create a sense of “home way” to feel comfortable?
I travel with my wife, my coach – who is a good friend of mine – and the fitness trainer and we try not to talk about tennis. We try not to think about tennis at all when we are outside the tennis courts. Live only a normal life.
I don’t consider myself a tennis player when I’m out. You should probably do better, as they say. But for me, the most important thing is to feel happy and feel comfortable on tour. I try to crowd out tennis life when I’m away from the tennis courts.
