Joey Kaufman covers the state of Ohio for The Columbus Dispatch. He joined me in a 1: 1 conversation about an Oregon football game in Ohio. The Ducks and Buckeyes will play in Columbus on Sept. 11.
Listen to the whole conversation here.
How big is this game for the state of Ohio:
For the state of Ohio, it’s really this game against Oregon, as the state of Ohio has been knowing with Big Ten lately. They play Penn State in late October, but Ohio State handled Penn State and hasn’t lost to them since 2016. And Ohio State has survived with Michigan … no Big Ten team has yet won Ryan Daya during their tenure. For these reasons, Oregon is a game that most Ohio State fans have toured on the calendar.
The Importance of a Good Quarterback vs. Ohio State:
It’s going to be important because if you look at the teams that have been successful against Ohio State in recent years, the teams have gotten the most out of the quarterback. Alabama beat them last year – they had a Mac Jones. Clemson won the Ohio State playoffs in 2019, well, they had Trevor Lawrence. Indiana really sued the state of Ohio last year, they had Michael Penix Jr. and he played really well … it’s not enough to have someone to lead the game. You have to go do plays.
We talked about Buckeyes ’defense issues, injuries to the states of Ohio, and what Ducks scares Buckeyes the most. Really good conversation with team-covering Kaufman.
