Oregon Soccer Fall Training Memo 8.6

[ad_1]

The first day of the Oregon football season is officially on the books.

If no one knew that the pre-season camp began today, strength coach Aaron Feld announced the matter by emphatically greeting every player who arrived at the Hatfield-Dowlin complex and bringing his typical strong energy during the warm-ups.

After training, Mario Cristobal gave the latest update on the situation of Jamal Hill and DJ James. More about that here.

Here are other news and notes that stood out from Cristobal’s media availability after the internship.

DJ Johnson update

In addition to Hill and James, the most notable was the senior’s strict absence of DJ Johnson from rehearsals.

Johnson is about to start the 2020 season and is one of Joe Moorhead’s most unique weapons.

But he was not seen anywhere on Friday, and there is not much information about his absence at the moment.

“DJ Johnson will hopefully join us pretty soon,” Cristobal said.

The return of Cam McCormick

It’s been a long time since Cam McCormick was healthy enough to do what he did on Friday.

The older tight head and Bend’s native attended positioning exercises and ran routes during the exercise. It may not sound like much, but for McCormick it is a very positive sign after the injuries.

McCormick played 13 matches as a redshirt freshman in 2017 and looked a long and productive career in green and yellow. But injuries have derailed him since then, and he hasn’t played the game since he broke his fibula at the opening of the 2018 season.

On Friday, he moved smoothly and without any significant luck or obstacle. It’s still in its infancy, but things seem to be heading in the right direction for McCormick. Cristobal gave a positive outlook when talking to reporters.

“He looked really good,” Cristobal said. “It’s very promising to watch him run there. Cam’s journey in particular has been a roller coaster ride. But there is a lot of heart there. There is certainly a lot of football experience and a good amount of football intelligence and desire.

“He’s been through what he could have done, and the time is now here. We are very optimistic that this will be a really good season for him. “

Plan a pre-season camp

Friday’s practice is the first in a short leg where players are only in shorts, helmets and spider pads.

As for things to get out of here, Cristobal said he and his staff would like everything to be installed in virtually No. 6, perhaps a little on top of point 7.

From there, they would like to be able to browse and then go through a “reinstallation period” where they can make some adjustments.

“When you hit a practice of four or five, you always spend 15 or 16 minutes of training on something unique that you might see during the year in relation to your opponent,” Cristobal said. “You might see an air attack. You might see four down. You might see all kinds of crazy blits and all that.

“Before we get to the bulk of that or really exotic stuff, you want to install most of your stuff.”

Frosh receivers

Cristobal gave a glowing review of some of Oregon’s highly regarded true freshman receivers after his first official training season.

“Troy Franklin, Dont’e Thornton, today they looked like veterans,” Cristobal said as he discussed how Oregon’s early students have benefited from coming to campus in the winter.

He quickly joked that he should return this statement back so he didn’t set expectations too high. But he continued, “They seem to know and seem to belong. They do a lot of plays. “

What’s new

With four players on the other side of the ball who didn’t sign up early, Cristobal gave some idea of what to expect from Brandon Buckner, Jonathan Flowe, Jabril McNeil and Terrell Tilmon.

“These guys are going to be everywhere,” Cristobal said, where they can play in the top seven. “We need to figure out their skills and how it best suits us. Certainly Terrell, Brandon, Jabril… They are natural outsiders.

“Jabril has inner talents and he has done it before. I know Jon Jon has played outdoors, but now he’s better suited for insiders. “

Of course, it’s worth watching where these four get reps as the camp progresses.
