Jason Kenny won seventh gold and became British Olympic winner Tokyo Olympics 2020

Jason Kenny became Britain’s most decorated Olympic champion when he won gold with a men’s keyring in Tokyo in 2020 on Sunday.

Kenny, who admitted he struggled during the men’s sprint earlier this week, took his gold medal to seven, one more than his fellow Keirin expert Chris Hoy. Kenny now has a total of nine medals that took him past Sir Bradley Wiggins by eight.

Kenny had made it to the keirin finals after taking on his British teammate Jack Carlin in the rear wheel semifinals, and the draw gave the countrymen a rare opportunity to collaborate early in the race.

Expectations that the final would be a traditional sprint finish faded as Kenny dropped the chasing group at an explosive rate while half of the six-lap race was still ahead.

The difference was almost equal when Kenny crossed the finish line 0.763 seconds from Malaysian Azizulhasni Awang. The bronze was taken by Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen.

The victorious rider took off his helmet, threw it at a Team GB official, and enjoyed applause from spectators at the Izu Velodrome, who had previously seen their two medal hopes, Yudai Nitta and Yuta Wakimoto, not making it to the finals of the Japanese track event.

Kenny is now the first British to win nine Olympic medals.

In the Keirin final, Australian Matthew Glaetzer let go of the Kennys bike before derny, who sets the pace for the first three laps, had even hatched off the track. The British defensive keirin champion from Rio 2016 took a look behind him, spying on the opportunity and leaving, leaving five shelled men to fight for silver and bronze.
