At the Olympics closed to fans, athletes have used TikTok to get a glimpse of Olympic Village life.
Many athletes have become popular social media apps throughout the games, from dining room reviews to videos testing infamous cardboard beds, and videos from videos practicing in the arena.
US team rugby player Ilona Maher published her entire Olympic experience daily and garnered millions of views from many of her videos. He wanted to show that the Olympics are also people, by publishing relative and fun content.
They consider us Olympians who don’t have fun or who are always crazy, Maher, 24, said. But no, there were people. There were people. We love to have fun. We love jokes.
In one of his most watched videos from Tokyo, Maher and his teammates tested what actions it could do lots of discussed cardboard beds offered to athletes in the Olympic Village. Mahers video where he performs resuscitation and strikes an imaginary robber on the bed, his teammates practice yoga and another throws anger, among other activities has been viewed more than 7.5 million times.
The bed survived all the action.
“I got a lot of answers,” Maher said. “It was just the people I really love when they saw this looking inside the village, and the food and the beds and the atmosphere of the village I think people really liked.”
Maher also got viruses from his videos about flirting with other Olympics over 4 million views on video addressed to all high-ranking foreign demigods in the Olympic Village.
The video features Maher’s lip sync to the popular TikTok voice phrase that says: Hi, sorry, quick question. Are you looking for a wife?
Mahers videos have found a large and fast growing audience. He said he had 86,000 followers before the Olympics; just weeks later, he has more than 780,000.
He was initially worried he wouldn’t be able to use TikTok while in Tokyo because social media rules have been stricter in previous Olympics. This year, the International Olympic Committee facilitated guidance, which opens the door for the Olympics to take over TikTok.
“I thought it was so key and so awesome that they still allowed us to do so because it also helped our brand grow because we were able to keep in touch with our fans,” Maher said. “We didn’t have family or fans there in person, so we had to give them an inner look in some way.”
Like Maher, American diver Tyler Downs showed his fans that the Olympics also have a sense of humor through his TikToks.
Why everyone thought the Olympics weren’t fun, like we’re not just athletic, Downs wrote in the video shared with over 900,000 followers. In the video caption, I swear I’m normal, garnered over 14 million views.
Downs were also earned More than 16 million views of the video where he wrote, when you see Simone Biles at the Olympics, set a voice, talk to me.
In his other viral videos, Downs, 18, uses TikTok like a typical teenager, popular TikTok dances, annoys his roommates and by participating in popular TikTok trends.
Cody Melphy, an American rugby player with nearly a million TikTok fans, has also used TikTok to give fans an exclusive look at life in the Olympic Village.
His the most popular video games, with an amazing 21.5 million views, shows fans things that make sense in the Olympic Village, including separate apartments for all athletes from different countries, bedrooms with cardboard beds, and a 24/7 dining room for all athletes.
Melphy, 28, has also interacted with fans directly on the platform and answered questions about whether athletes can hang out with athletes from other countries, for example. In response to Melphy posted a video about the entertainment center athletes play table tennis and arcade games and watch the Olympics.
I was just trying to give people what I would have liked to see if I hadn’t been there, Melphy said. If I came across something that was like: Oh, this is so cool, I took my phone out and recorded it and tried to put together a little video for people to see.
