Diamondbacks vs. Padres – Game summary – August 8, 2021

SAN DIEGO-Blake Snell hit 13 of seven sharp innings, Jake Cronenworth homeed and drove both times, and the San Diego Padres defeated Madison Bumgarner and the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0 on Sunday.

Snell (6-4) only allowed a hit in the fifth and won a second straight start for the first time this season. Left-handed responded to his longest journey since he joined Padres this year, giving just two hits and walking three.

It just feels good to come out of my hand, Snell said. I’ve just switched some things to be more consistent and more on top of them, to make them play a little better. I just feel more. That, and my confidence is at an all-time high, I have games like that.

Bumgarner (6-7) allowed two runs with six hits during seven innings. He hit five and walked one.

I thought our left did a really good job against Bumgarner today, Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. He was apparently sharp and efficient and fought every time.

Cronenworth doubled first while driving in Adam Frazier. In the fourth, he hit his 16th home team.

Whatever I can do, be it on defense or on a plate, I’m here for that, Cronenworth said.

Cronenworth filled the injured shortstop with Fernando Tatis Jr. and made a dive stop on the right side and threw Carson Kelly out.

In all I’ve seen Jake do, he’s grown, Tingler said Whether it’s hitting, moving him around the field and baserunning, he continues to grow.

Emilio Pagan created the perfect eighth place in San Diego and Mark Melancon worked as a double for Kole Calhoun in ninth place in 33rd place.

Blake threw the ball well, and for Pagan Melancon behind the defense, it was huge, Tingler said.

Nick Ahmed was the only Diamondbacks player to make it to the third base. He got there one out in sixth, but Snell hit Calhoun and Kelly to keep the closure.

Padres recorded ten or more strikes for the third time in a row, for the third time this season.

After Yu Darvish went seven days in a Saturday night, Padres beginners have thrown seven innings in consecutive games for the first time this year. San Diego have allowed three hits or less in 10 games this season and are 9-1 in these races.

Tingler said that seeing them lined up alongside the team is huge. It’s great for bull cubs and great for their confidence.

TRAINERS ROOM

Diamondbacks: RHP Noe Ramirez and OF Stuart Fairchild, both on the injured list after a COVID-19 positive test, played each other on Saturday recovering. Neither player has symptoms.

Diamondbacks: RHP Zac Gallen (1-6, 4.62) will face the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on Tuesday in the first set of two games.

Padres: RHP Joe Musgrove (7-7, 2.87) opens a three-game series at Petco Park against Miami Marlins on Monday.
