Colorado Rockies investigates when fans use racial words during an attack by Miami Marlins field player Lewis Brinson

The Colorado Rockies said they were investigating when a fan used racial obscurity with Miami Marlins field player Lewis Brinson, black, on Sunday at Coors Field.

Microphones on a Bally Sports Florida television broadcast caused the fan to shout the N-word several times after the second field during Brinson’s at-batt in the ninth installment of the Rockies 13-8 win.

“The Colorado Rockies have hated Marlins’ fan race against Lewis Brinson during the ninth set of today’s game, ”the team said in a statement after the match. “Although the target was not identified before the end of the game, the Rockies are still investigating this case.

“The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and all fans who use any kind of derogatory language will be removed and banned from Coors Field.”

Fans had begun to fill Coors Field downstairs with late shifts and moved closer to the post-game concert that was part of the Faith Day celebration.

Team officials were unable to find out the janitor in the area where the fan was shouting until the concert ended about an hour later.

Marlins spokesman Jason Latimer told The Associated Press via text message that “neither Lewis nor anyone else in the field or mine has heard a cry from Marlins.”

“We took the matter to the attention of the Rocky Mountains. I have to postpone the way the matter is handled,” Latimer told the AP.

Tony Clark, CEO of the MLB Players Association, said in a statement on Sunday night that “we must continue to work together to ensure that racism is never tolerated on or off the field.”

“While many are truly committed to respect and equality with all, the horrific racial animus on display today underscores that much remains to be done,” he said.

Brinson is in the middle of his fourth season with Marlins. The 27-year-old went against 2-4 in a game played on Sunday with two RBIs, beating 0.261 this season.
